Jennifer became a lawyer to focus on advancing substantive gender and racial equality. During law school, she worked on employment and housing discrimination cases at U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and the National ACLU Women’s Rights Project. At Center for Reproductive Rights, she worked on the landmark Supreme Court case Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt, which struck down harmful state legislation aimed at restricting access to abortion. She has published and presented papers on the harms caused by Crisis Pregnancy Centers, obstetric violence, and the criminalization of birthing decisions.
As an intern and Legal Fellow with ACLU of Georgia, Jennifer worked on numerous cases involving voter suppression, prisoners’ rights, right to counsel, free speech, and religious exercise. She contributed to a successful lawsuit brought by National ACLU Racial Justice Project that ended the practice of jailing those who couldn’t afford to pay fines and probation fees for misdemeanor offenses in DeKalb County.
Jennifer serves as Chief of Staff to Georgia House Rep. Renitta Shannon. Alongside Rep. Shannon, she has helped defeat anti-immigrant and anti-LGBTQ measures, voter suppression, destruction of campus sexual assault proceedings, restrictions on protest, and harsh criminal sentences. She is a 2015-2016 fellow of the Georgia Women’s Policy Institute, where she promoted the adoption of a state Earned Income Tax Credit and helped pass a bill requiring the testing of backlogged rape kits.
Raised by a single mom on a teacher’s salary, Jennifer is passionate about ensuring that everyone has access to justice, regardless of income. She volunteers her time to obtain Temporary Protective Orders for domestic violence survivors. She also represents clients in Family Law matters as a volunteer attorney with Gwinnett Legal Aid.
